Stage @ Zing Comedy Night

Once again AltLinc ventured to the Zing comedy night, as they so frequently do on Mondays.

The show started as it went on, with a lot of laughing. The MC for the night was Njambi McGrath.  Her styling was focussed more on her African origins and comparative jokes between the African culture and the British culture.  She had a confident start and kept everyone fired up throughout the night.  She was a little shakey on some grounds and the comparative jokes did become a little boring after a while but her performance was solid and she had a strong opener and closer for each time she was on stage.

Our first comic of the evening was Phillip Simon.  A Jewish man whose humour did rely on the cultural differences between the Jewish people and those of other dispositions.  His comedy wasn’t slowed down by it though.  His jokes were varied and assorted and it was quite rare to find ourselves not laughing throughout his time on stage.  It didn’t feel like there was a moment which he would tell a joke and the room went quiet as if to not understand the punch-line, in fact the punch line was delivered almost flawlessly throughout.

After a brief ten minute break we had our second comedian for the night, the Australian born Nick Ellray.  His act was one of the highlights of the night as he was one of the funniest comedians that we’ve seen at the comedy night.  His jokes were fluent and his opening was strong.  There wasn’t a point in the act which felt old and every joke kept me laughing so hard that I couldn’t even stop to take a swig of my pint.

The third on stage was the calm and collected Jack Shanik.  His style of comedy was a little different from the previous two and for that reason I think didn’t sit too well with the audience.  There were high notes of the performance but he couldn’t keep the laughs flowing as well as Ellray had done before him.  His opening was strong and his act was indeed an interesting one but compared to the previous two it was just a little stale.

The headline act of tonight was the hilarious Kevin Shepard and I honestly didn’t expect such a great performance, perhaps it’s the cynic in me.  From the moment he stepped on stage everyone in the audience was laughing harder than any other time the whole night.  His jokes were consistent but also different.  He mixed in a few one liners with some good narrative based jokes which really captured the mood and left the audience begging for the punch line.  His act was definitely the other highlight of the night and it’s comics like this who make us want to keep coming back.
