A lively and eccentric event which gave me something to think about when it came to my fashion choices. The Drill Hall vintage fair was definitely worth going to.
So when the word vintage comes to mind it can mean many different things to some people. Some think of classic cars, others think of classic hunting rifles and firearms and if you’re me you think of the classic Atari 2600 video games console. But today I learnt something new about vintage, it’s fashion connotations.
Heading down to the Drill Hall in the city of Lincoln I wasn’t sure what to expect from a vintage fashion show, I’d never thought about my fashion sense really and vintage just wasn’t a term I was familiar with in fashion. But after heading inside I got a real taste of what vintage lovers enjoy so much.
The atmosphere inside the hall was nice and relaxed, friendly merchants selling their fashion and other vintage goods were a welcome sight to see to someone who really didn’t know what they were expecting to find.
As I walked around the hall I got a sense that the people who were there were incredibly passionate about their vintage wares. Items from 50’s magazines, cutlery to jackets which looked like Steve McQueen himself could have worn them, were all there on display and waiting to be snapped up by anyone willing.
Men and women of all ages were welcomed at the event and it really did feel like there was something for everyone.
I was still a little confused as to why people go to the trouble of looking at the past to find items for the present. I talked to Hollie Read of H.E.R Vintage who told me how she got started.
“I started off online but I stopped selling on there because I wanted to focus on the fairs more, they’re a much friendlier atmosphere.”
She went on to say who it is she caters for with her range of products.
“I sell mainly 60’s clothing and items for people who are true vintage lovers but I also like selling to students who have a passion for it. It’s just a nice crowd to sell to really.”
Many other stalls were there selling their ranges of vintage clothing including TheVintageScene and FroggyWentCourting, both of whom had unique lines when it came to vintage.
Lovers and those with a passion for this kind of clothing should definitely check out Judys Vintage Fair, coming to the Engine Shed on Saturday the 15th February.
Overall it was a great day, my only regret is that a certain leather coat I wanted was a little bigger, a man my size has needs.
