Alternative Mother’s Day

death scene from movie Psycho

No we don’t mean ‘alternative mother’ in this way

When we were younger we always used to give our mothers letters, handmade cards or a picture, perhaps through a lack of money or sheer imagination. Yet as we’ve grown up Mother’s Day has become extremely commercialised, with the standard gifts across the country being a moonpig card (yes we’re singing the theme tune too) and some already doomed cut flowers.

We’ve got nothing against those moonpig guys but if you want to give something a little more special to the main woman in your life, read on.

1. Why not reincarnate your younger self? In the current economic climate is it really worth spending £10 on a card & flowers that are already destined for the compost heap? Instead why not refer back to your childhood with a meaningful letter, a kiddie inspired I.O.U or a sketch of you and your mumma? It’s original, comes from the heart and if she does throw it away, you’ve only lost the price of an A4 piece of paper and some ink from your pen.

2. With all this ‘global warming,’ spring has been getting earlier and earlier. Why not make the most of man-kinds disregard for nature? Pack a picnic and take your mum to one of the thousands of free entry; homes, gardens or wild places this Sunday? You don’t have to spend money, just devote the day to her, and whatever it is she wants to do. Let her know about this in advance though, so she has time to consider her perfect day.

3. If you’re not close to your mother, she’s passed away or she’s just not that bothered. It doesn’t mean you can’t do anything this mother’s day. Why not help a mother in a third world country by donating some money, you’ll even be helping her children and family too.

5. If your mum really loves flowers, why not make it an investment and buy her a potted plant instead? The cut flowers will only die in a week and the pot plant could give her something to love and tend to, a connection that she has with you even when you’re not there.

If these ideas don’t tickle your fancy, here’s a couple more Lincoln events to consider,
